The best advice I've ever been given
Recently, I was listening to a podcast interview when the host asked a simple but powerful question:
“What is the best and worst advice you’ve ever been given?” It lingered with me long after the episode ended.
I found myself wondering how I would answer. When I traced my own creative journey back through the years, one phrase rose unmistakably to the surface—a sentence that has quietly shaped so many of my choices: “Leap, and the net will appear.” From The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.
The Courage to Step Into the Unknown
That advice has stayed with me through seasons of uncertainty, transition, and growth. It speaks of faith. Of courage. Of trusting that even when you cannot see what lies below, you are not falling alone. So many times, I have stepped forward without knowing exactly how things would work out. I’ve taken risks, followed quiet nudges, said yes before everything felt “safe” or “sorted.”
And somehow—again and again—the net has appeared. Not always in the way I expected. Not always immediately. But faithfully.
Letting Go of What Feels “Safe”
Over time, I’ve learned something surprising about leaping. Often, what we believe we are giving up—security, comfort, familiarity, belonging—feels essential. It feels protective. It feels wise. But sometimes, those very things are what hold us back. They can quietly become cages.
What feels safe can also become small. What feels comfortable can become limiting. What feels familiar can keep us from growing. And in order to move forward, we must be willing to loosen our grip.
A New Leap This Year
With all of this in mind, I’ve decided to take another big leap of faith this year. ’m moving studios. After years in my cosy, grounded little haven in Woodlands House in Woodstock, I’m stepping into something new: a larger, collaborative studio space shared with four other artists in Gardens. It’s a bold move.
Especially since I made the decision before securing someone to take over my current lease. Yes—terrifying.
Thrilling, Terrifying, and Full of Promise
This new chapter feels like many things all at once: Thrilling. Nerve-wracking. Inspiring. Unsettling. Enriching. Wonderful. Terrifying.
All wrapped into one.
But it also feels right. It feels like growth. It feels like obedience to a quiet inner voice. It feels like another invitation to trust.
Walking Forward in Faith
I don’t know exactly how everything will unfold. I don’t know what challenges or surprises lie ahead. But I do know this: Every time I’ve leapt before, the net has appeared. Not because I was fearless. But because I was willing.
So here I go again.
If You Needed This Today…
If you’re standing on the edge of something new… If you’re hesitating because it feels too big, too risky, too uncertain… If you’re waiting until everything feels perfectly secure…
Maybe this is your gentle reminder:
You don’t have to see the whole path. You just have to take the next step. Leap. And trust that the net will appear because you are not alone. You are carried by a Father in Heaven who knows you intimately and calls you by name. You are His.
Watch this space as I navigate the unknown—one brave step at a time.
