Opened in 1931, the KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital (formerly the Addington Children’s Hospital) was dedicated to the care and treatment of children, a first in Africa.

Subsequently, having been shut down by the Apartheid government in1984 because it offered services to children of colour, the hospital fell into complete disrepair.

Driven by the vision of a world-class children’s hospital that is cost-effective, transdisciplinary, environmentally friendly and sustainable, open to all children, adolescents and their caregivers, regardless of economic background or social standing, the KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital Trust raises funds for and project manages the hospital’s restoration process. In 2010, the KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital re-establishment project was initiated to reignite the dream of providing accessible healthcare to all children in the province, because every child matters!

After hearing about the renovation of the KZN Children’s Hospital, I was inspired, once again, to offer what I had in my hands to give: the ability to paint.

I took on the task of painting up individual portraits in oil paint of some of the incredible children whose lives have been positively impacted by the recently re-opened facilities at the KZN Children’s Hospital as my way of raising funds for this worthy cause.

These 12 portraits went on auction at The Pencil Club in Umhlanga on 5 September 2024 and a good amount of money was raised towards the KZN Trust’s Fundraising efforts to continue with the rebuilding of the hospital.
