En Route

“My work is an emotional reaction to the world around me.”

Lauriana Glenny

In July 2009, I was hospitalized for 5 days of sleep therapy as a result of post-viral Chronic Fatigue and Clinical Depression as a result of not properly recovering from a horrible strain of Glandular Fever two and a half years prior to this.

Whilst I was in hospital, I had a visceral experience on my last day. I was taking a shower and I saw images of areas from the town I grew up in hitting me as the droplets of water splattered my face from the showerhead I stood under. I knew I needed to re-visit these areas and paint them.

The result was a collection of collaged oil paintings that were deeply personal and which provided a vehicle for my physical and emotional healing, as well as a way out of the deep dark pit of depression I found myself in.

On the 12th of July 2010, exactly a year after my stay in hospital, my first solo show, En-Route, opened at ArtSpace Durban .
