Stop & Look 2024

Stop & Look 2024

This collection of oil paintings celebrates the everyday, chance encounters we have with what we would usually refer to as the mundane, but once encountered, these very ordinary places leave and record traces of our memories...both thoughts and feelings that we experienced in that moment on that particular day, but also memories long forgotten about that rise to the surface through what we paid attention to that day.

When we start to pay attention to the unremarkable remarkableness of our daily lives, we learn to watch for the greatness in the ordinary and to use our imaginations to not only learn more about ourselves, but to also see the greatness and uniqueness in others.

According to Frederich Buechner, “the ordinary points to the extraordinary that we find in every day that we wake, in every discussion we have, in every walk we take, in every moment we come upon.”

As we begin to stop, look and listen to our lives and what God is doing in them, we begin to uncover the plot of our life’s story.

Many times we say that life is typical, mundane, common, routine or dull. I’m convinced that by paying attention to the everyday things you usually pass by unnoticed...such as shop fronts or street corners, the house next door, or the street you drive down every day but never really see or notice anymore or the sunlight hitting that particular wall or verandah at a particular time of the day...that every moment becomes worth noticing.

Our steps then take on new beginnings of a walk into a hall of art, life and meaning that will never disappoint.

And each day lived becomes one more opportunity to find beauty in unexpected places, to inspire hope and both build memories and re-live memories.
